Each year, about 70,000 energy thefts occur in Michigan. While employees monitor suspicious accounts and are trained to spot altered equipment, they cannot do it alone! With your help, the large number of energy thefts happening in Michigan can be diminished.
When energy is illegally reconnected or transferred the person committing the act is putting themselves at risk, along with their family, friends and neighbors. In some cases, people do this for a fee and then put the homeowner or renter in serious danger. Through their actions, energy thieves create the possibility of shock, fire, serious injury or death.
Also, when thieves steal energy, everyone pays a higher cost on their energy bills. The cost to account for uncollectible funds is reflected in rates.
You Can Help — Report Energy Theft
To report energy theft, you can submit a report using our online Energy Theft form or call 1-855-THEFTSTOP (1-855-843-3878), a toll free phone service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can be assured that all information provided will be kept confidential. Telephone reports may be made anonymously if you prefer. All you have to do is call and let us know the address where the theft is occurring, a description of how and when this happens, dates if known are helpful, names of suspected individuals, a contact number and any additional details you might have. After that, we’ll handle the rest and conduct an investigation. For your safety, we recommend that you do not confront any suspected energy thieves, as it could interfere with our own investigation process and put you in danger.
Energy Theft is a crime. Michigan has approved new legislation to govern theft of electricity and natural gas. Individuals who steal, use unauthorized energy or sell or transfer energy illegally can be penalized resulting in a misdemeanor or felony charges.
Copper Wire Theft
Copper wire theft is an illegal and dangerous problem throughout the country and Michigan. Coming in contact with live power lines and transformers, thieves put themselves at risk of serious injury or death and being the cause of electrical failures or outages throughout neighborhoods.
Consumers Energy offers up to a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in the theft of copper, vandalism, tampering or trespassing at an electric substation or service center. If you have information leading to the arrest of copper thieves, please call the Consumers Energy Security Command Center at 1-800-760-3295. Your information will remain confidential.
Fraud and Stolen Identity
Residential customers requesting new energy service or moving within the company's territory must provide identity validating information. This complies with the federal Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 (FACTA) and helps strengthen the protections that Consumers Energy has in place to safeguard the information of its customers. If you are required to fax notarized documentation please use the fax number 1-866-703-8115.
Consumers Energy representatives WILL NEVER CALL AND ASK YOU for:
- Your Consumers Energy eServices account password or user ID
- Your credit card or financial institution user ID or password
- Credit card numbers and/or financial account numbers
- Your full Social Security number, driver’s license number or state ID number
- You to send your payments to non-company payment centers

The Right Answer
Energy, copper and identity thefts are not the answer. For customers who may have difficulty making a bill payment, a number of options are available, including financial aid through People Care, a program offered by Consumers Energy and The Salvation Army.
