Install or Start Service

Couple Moving into a New HouseStart Service

Are you moving? If your new residence is served by Consumers Energy, you can submit a form to Start Service to have electricity and/or natural gas service activated. If you wish to transfer service from one location to another, or turn off service at your current location, please visit eServices to complete this request.

New Service Installation

If you're building and need new natural gas or electric service installed, or are converting to natural gas from another source, our New Service Installation online form makes this convenient for you.  If you would like to calculate your Natural Gas savings, use our Natural Gas Energy Calculator.  Before starting the online form, you may want to review our brochure, Electricity & Natural Gas: A Customer Guide for Requesting New Service.

Landlords, Realtors and Builders

Landlords must validate the renter's identification and confirm that the renter gave them permission to use his/her personal identification. There is a box to check on the Notification of Customer Change online application form.

Realtors, builders and contractors must have the customer of record call in to establish new service.

Question: Why do landlords need to validate that a renter gave permission to use his/her personal identification when requesting electric or natural gas service in their name? Answer

Fair Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACTA)

Residential customers requesting new energy service or moving within the company's territory must provide identity validating information.

This complies with the federal Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) and helps strengthen the protections that Consumers Energy has in place to safeguard the information of its customers.

The primary source of validating information is a driver's license or Social Security card. Customers also may provide a Michigan state ID number, U.S. military card, military dependent's ID card, Native American tribal document or passport.

Question: Why does Consumers Energy need to know my Social Security number, driver's license number, or Michigan state ID when I request service or make a change to my account? Answer

Customers who refuse to provide identification over the phone will be required to provide hard copy evidence of identity either by:

  • Taking appropriate information to a Consumers Energy direct payment office, or
  • Faxing notarized copies toll-free to the utility for review at (877) 635-9549

An immediate family member or someone with legal documented representation may request service on behalf of a customer with the proper information.
