Earn Bill Credits for Your Business

Join the Program and Boost Your Bottom Line

Join the Commercial & Industrial Demand Response program and earn bill credits for agreeing to reduce energy use on event days. You can boost your bottom line — and help keep electric rates affordable for your community.

There’s no cost to join the program. And your small changes can have a big payoff… for both your business and for our planet.

For an overview of the Demand Response program, see our Commercial & Industrial Demand Response page.

How Much Can You Earn?

You earn bill credits two ways:
  1. You earn bill credits for agreeing to take part and reduce your energy use
  2. You can earn more credits by successfully reducing energy use on event days

So even if no event day occurs, you still get bill credits.

Here’s an example:
  • Nomination: energy use reduction of 500 kW
  • Incentive: $12,500 capacity initiative, whether or not an event day is called

What that means for your business:
  • If you are a 5% margin business, the $12,500 incentive = $250,000 in revenue

Average earnings:
  • In 2020, businesses earned an average of $11,657 in bill credits

What Is the Incentive Structure?

You earn bill credits based on how much energy you agree to reduce if an event day occurs. Your business earns:
  • $25/kW energy use savings based on the amount of energy you agree to reduce on an event day (requires a one-year contract). You receive this incentive even if no event days are called.

  • $0.05/kWh additional savings for any extra kW reductions you make on an event day
At the start of your contract, an Energy Solutions Manager will help you decide on a reasonable energy reduction goal for your business. That way, you’ll know what to do if an event day happens.

How Do You Know Your Energy Use Levels?

Get access to real-time energy use monitoring — here’s how:
  • Nominate more than 100 kW of energy use savings
  • Monitor your energy use in real-time, even when it’s not an event day
  • Save even more money on energy costs
This tool helped one company achieve a 6% overall energy use reduction… resulting in $48,000 in savings.

What Is an Event Day?

Event days happen:
  • When electricity demand is at its highest, putting strain on the energy grid
  • No more than 5 times a year
  • Between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Weekdays in June – August
