Michigan Renewable Energy Credit

Offset Your Carbon Footprint with Michigan Generated Renewable Energy Credits

The Michigan Renewable Energy Credit Program is an inexpensive and easy way for you, or your business, to support renewable energy in the Great Lakes State. When you take part, your monthly energy use is matched with renewable energy credits from wind or solar energy generated right here in Michigan.

How It Works

• You pay a small incremental cost on your monthly bill to match your energy use with renewable energy credits. Your cost is only $0.014 per kWh or $1.40 per 100 kWh block.

• Consumers Energy works with Michigan wind and solar facilities to fulfill the renewable energy credits you have subscribed to.

• Your renewable energy credits are “retired” each year, meaning only you can claim that your energy was matched with them.

• Open to all customers, residential and business, who haven’t had a shut-off notice in the last 9 months.

• Yearly re-enrollment is automatic.

Option #1 - Match All or a Portion of Your Energy Use

Match all or a portion of your energy use with renewable energy from wind or solar generated in Michigan. You can choose from several options and pay just $0.014 per kWh. For example, a home or business that uses 1,000 kWh per month, would only pay $14.00 per month to match all energy use.

Option #2 - Subscribe to Block of Renewable Energy

If you prefer a fixed match of renewable energy at the same cost every month, you can also choose to subscribe to a block in the Michigan REC program. Each block represents a match of 100 kWh of your usage with renewable energy. Each block is $1.40, and you can subscribe to as many blocks as you like.
