The Right Renewable Energy Solution for You
By taking part in this program, you help bring new, 100% Michigan-based wind and solar energy onto the grid.
No upfront payments or capital investment. You earn credits to offset your subscription fee and may reduce your overall energy bill.
Enroll anywhere between 1 - 100% of your energy use. Contracts flex with your organization’s energy needs.
Nothing will be constructed on your property and there is no need for maintenance or electrical system changes. Your business operations won’t be impacted.
How the Program Works
Use Consume and pay for electricity as you normally would.
Enroll Choose the percentage of your energy use you want to match with zero-carbon renewable energy. Your agreement will tell us how much renewable energy needs to be built to reach your goals.Earn Once projects come online, your subscription begins. The energy generated is sold into the market to earn capacity and energy credits. These credits are passed on to you and may even help reduce your monthly energy bill. Total annual credits are forecasted so you receive a consistent monthly credit.
Sustain Get renewable energy credits from the projects you support. We provide a detailed yearly attestation of your credits to support your sustainability goals.
When FireKeepers Casino was looking for a new renewable energy program, they turned to us to help meet their sustainability goals. See how we helped in our video.
Consumers Energy Renewable Energy Program is Green-e® Energy certified and meets the environmental and consumer-protection standards set forth by the nonprofit, Center for Resource Solutions. Learn more at www.green-e.org.
Business Renewable Energy Program FAQ
Our program is like a virtual power purchase agreement. Resources are connected to the larger electric grid, which provides electricity for all our customers. As a participant, you get 100% of the value of the renewable resources in the program. This includes ownership of the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and the monetary value of the energy produced. It also includes the capacity value from your participation to offset your subscription cost.
When you enroll in the program, you support the development of specific, new renewable energy resource(s). Once your subscription begins it is supported by the program's wind and solar projects.
Your business can claim the RECs and associated carbon reduction from those credits to offset your facility’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We use the EPA’s GHG calculator to determine this offset. If you have a greenhouse gas accountant, they can take the RECs and associated carbon emission reduction into account.
The program will provide an attestation that has the serialized value of the REC. The serial number then can be used to track the credit within MIRECS which is Michigan’s Renewable Energy Credit Management System. This lets you document the REC for your records and trace its origin if needed.
Contact your Energy Solutions Manager or fill out our contact form above for a customized proposal for your business.
This is a bundled product that provides you the RECs to offset your Scope 2 emissions, in addition to energy and capacity credits. This product also provides a local Michigan-based solution and guarantees supply into the future.
No, there are no penalties for changes in use. If your facility has a load reduction which is permanent, we will add that capacity back to the program to support other enrollments. If you increase electricity use, we will match the increase with renewable energy to the extent to which it is available at your contracted subscription fee. If renewable energy is only available at a cost that is more than your subscription fee, you will have the option to match at the increased cost. Please note that there may be penalties for contracted accounts that are closed. You should work with your Energy Solutions Manager to find the best contract fit for your business.
All contract term lengths start at the same price and same credits. However, there are a few considerations to make as you determine the right contract length for you:
For re-enrollment, if the resources are still available you can re-enroll in them. However, there is an incremental 2% cost increase for 5- and 10-year contracts if you continue to re-enroll at the shorter-term length. Contracts for 15- and 20-year terms don't have the incremental re-enrollment cost. However, re-enrollment at the same cost is only available for the life of that resource.
Yes. Eligible facilities can be bundled under one contract if their combined aggregate demand is 1,000,000 kWh or more. The contract lets you subscribe at different percent match levels per facility if you choose to do so. Participation costs and credits will be applied to each of the enrolled account’s electric bills.
