Commercial and Industrial Demand Response

What is the Demand Response Program?

It’s a program that compensates your business for temporarily reducing energy use on event days — when electricity demand is at its highest and stresses the energy grid, in turn causing costs to rise.

On days like this — called event days — we may ask your business to adjust its energy use. We actually ask customers to use less of what we sell. This helps lighten the load on the electric grid, keeping energy affordable and creating a more sustainable energy future.

Event days happen very rarely. And even if no event days occur during the year, you still earn incentives, because you agreed to be part of this important program.

And of course, you always remain in control of your site and your energy use.

Get Bill Credits Just for Participating

Your business has faced many challenges over the past year. As you work hard to move your business forward, we're here to help with new ways to improve your bottom line.

The innovative Demand Response program is one example. It lets your business save money — just by joining. In fact, your business earns incentives for simply agreeing to help ease demand on the energy grid.

For example: A typical business earns about $11,657* in bill credits per year. That would be equivalent to earning a 5% profit on $233,140 in revenue.

Small changes can make a big impact on your energy bill and our planet. Join the program today and become a force of change.

What Happens on an Event Day?

Before an event day happens, we will contact you. If an event day is called, it will occur between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on a weekday from June to August, no more than 5 times a year.

And you’ll receive details on when the event will occur and how long it’s expected to last. You’ll also get an alert telling you when the event is over so you can switch back to your normal work schedule.

How Does My Business Earn Incentives?

An Energy Solutions Manager will work with you to come up with an energy reduction plan that makes sense for your business.
Here’s how it works:

$25/kW Capacity Incentive
  • One-year signed contract compensation of $25/kW, and if a 2-year signed contract, the compensation is $27/kW first year and $30/kW the second year
  • This represents the largest portion of total incentives
$0.05/kWh Energy Incentive During Events
  • Incentives are for every hour of each event, based on your reduction performance versus your goal nomination
Any type of electric use reduction can count toward your overall nomination — from turning off lights in unused areas to shutting down production equipment and idling machines during an event. And our energy use monitoring dashboard can help you decide what actions you need to take to meet your reduction targets.** Remember... your small changes can have a big impact on Michigan for generations to come.

**Customers nominating more than 100 kWh of energy use savings are eligible.
