Switch Electric Suppliers

Review your options and consider your choices:

  • Visit the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) website for a list of suppliers.
  • Choose a new supplier and contact them to begin service.
  • Check the contract to see if there are penalties for early termination.
  • You may switch suppliers once a month with proper notification. There is a $5.00 fee for each switch. Switch may only occur on the first day of a bill cycle.

If you have any questions, contact us.

PLEASE NOTE: Consumers Energy is not associated or affiliated with Alternate Electric Suppliers, and we do not recommend or endorse any of their products. If you purchase your electricity from an Alternate Electric Supplier, the price you pay will not be regulated by the MPSC.

How it Works

  • We deliver the supplier’s electricity to you.
  • Your new supplier may bill you separately for energy or you’ll receive a consolidated bill from us.
  • We’ll bill you for our delivery.
  • For more information email us or call 800-805-0490.

Technical Information

When you switch suppliers, you may be financially responsible for providing and installing a new electric meter. For more information on wireless telecommunication options please contact the Electric Customer Choice Department at ecc@cmsenergy.com or by calling 800-805-0490.

For detailed information on the Electric Customer Choice Program, see the Retailer Handbook.

Return to Consumers Energy

You are always welcome to return to Consumers Energy. Here is how to do it:

  • Contact your current supplier and let them know you want to return to Consumers Energy. Be sure to ask what the changeover process involves – it may require additional fees.
  • If you switch suppliers more than once during a six-month period, you will be charged a $10 switch fee.
  • After you return to Consumers Energy, your bill will include a line item called “Gas Cost Recovery”.
