Program Participation Details for Retail Open Access


Please note that, by law, participation in Michigan’s Electric Customer Choice program is limited to no more than 10% of our previous calendar year’s weather adjusted sales.

Currently there is a waiting list to switch electric suppliers. If you’re interested in being added to the list, please call us at 800-805-0490.

Switch Electric Suppliers


Review your options and consider your choices:

  • Visit the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) website for a list of suppliers.
  • Check your existing contract with your current supplier to see there are penalties for early termination.
  • Choose a new supplier and contact them to begin service. The supplier will submit your enrollment on your behalf.
  • You may switch suppliers once a month with proper notification. There is a $5.00 fee for each switch. A switch may only occur on the first day of a bill cycle.

PLEASE NOTE: Consumers Energy is not associated or affiliated with Alternate Electric Suppliers, and we do not recommend or endorse any of their products. If you purchase your electricity from an Alternate Electric Supplier, the price you pay will not be regulated by the MPSC.

How it Works

  • Consumers Energy will continue to deliver your electricity.
  • You may see a change in how you are billed.
    • You may receive a bill for electricity from your new supplier, and a separate bill from Consumers Energy for the delivery.
    • You may receive one bill from Consumers Energy including the electric charges from your new supplier and the delivery charges from us.

You are always welcome to return to Consumers Energy. Here is how to do it:

  • Start by contacting your current supplier to see if you have fulfilled your minimum contract requirements. Be sure to ask if you will be subject to any additional fees.
  • Review the detailed information on the terms and conditions to return to Consumers Energy full service. Please review Return to Full-Service information.
  • To begin the Return Process to Consumers Energy Full service, please fill out the applicable Return to Full-Service form
