Stay warm with these energy saving tips

With cold weather spikes come bill increases. See how you can stay comfortable and lower your energy use below:

3 Factors That Impact Your Bill

1. The Cost of Upgrading Infrastructure

We want to bring you the most reliable service we possibly can, so we make updates to our natural gas pipelines and work to modernize our electric grid. The cost of these upgrades are included in our supply charges.

2. Increased Energy Delivery Costs

The cost of delivering electricity and natural gas to you can go up and down. Electricity costs fluctuate, so the rate is set to make sure this cost is covered. For natural gas, you only pay what we pay. There is no markup. But if the cost of natural gas rises, as it has recently, the cost on your bill will rise as well.

3. Changes in the Weather

As temperatures dip or soar, your heating or cooling equipment will also run more causing your energy costs to rise.

Checklist to Stay Safe in Extreme Cold

Protect yourself from cold weather conditions

Make sure to wear several layers of warm clothing when you’re outside to prevent frostbite and hypothermia. Cover exposed skin as much as you can with a hat, gloves and a scarf.

Prevent your pipes from freezing

Make sure to shut off the water that goes to your spigots to prevent your pipes from bursting. Also, make sure to keep your thermostat at 68° F or above.

Never use a stove or oven as a heat source

Using a stove or oven for warmth is a major fire hazard and can also allow dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide into your home.

Bring your pets in

Don’t keep your pets outside too long when it’s cold. Make sure their paws are protected from salt.

Use a carbon monoxide detector

Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector on every level of your house to prevent poisoning.

If you lose heat, go to a warm place.

If your home is uncomfortably cold, there are public places you can stay warm at such as local libraries, shopping malls and community centers. There may even be warming centers by you. To find them visit mi211.org and search “warming centers” with your zip code.

2 Cold-Related Emergencies to Watch For

Hypothermia

Hypothermia is when the body reaches a dangerously low temperature. Watch for these symptoms:

  • Shivering
  • Confusion
  • Memory loss
  • Exhaustion
  • Slurred speech

If you suspect hypothermia, seek medical attention immediately. Try to slowly warm up. If there is any wet clothing, make sure to remove it and put on dry clothes.

Frostbite

Frostbite happens when the skin and body tissues have been frozen. Watch for these symptoms:

  • Loss of feeling in the affected area
  • White or grayish yellow skin

If you suspect frostbite, make sure to move to a warm location right away and seek medical attention. Do not have the affected area touched.
