Consumers Energy to Provide Free Meals to Northeast Michigan Residents Hit Hardest After Fierce Winter Storm

Consumers Energy will provide free meals to residents in Iosco County and throughout the northeast Michigan region impacted by this week’s fierce winter storm.

WHAT: We want to support customers affected by this week’s severe winter storm and express our gratitude for their patience and cooperation as our crews work as quickly and safely as possible to restore electric service to Iosco County and northeast Michigan. 

A severe winter storm featuring heavy snow and high winds swept quickly through Michigan Friday into Sunday, causing damage and knocking out power to more than 164,000 customers. The northeast Lower Peninsula was hit hardest, including Midland, Bay, Iosco Ogemaw and Alcona counties.

More than 500 crews are working to restore power across Consumers Energy’s service territory, including support crews from as far away as Colorado, Oklahoma, Alabama, New York and St. Andre, New Brunswick, Canada. Crews intend to complete most restoration work by Sunday night.

IMPORTANT FACTS:

  • This week’s fierce winter storm struck Friday, Jan. 12. Heavy snow and high winds knocked down tree limbs, broke poles and damaged more than 2,500 power lines across the state.
  • Community Affairs’ Rich Castle will be available for interviews.
  • Free dine-in hamburger basket meal with French fries and one soft drink per person, provided by Consumers Energy and courtesy of the Sand Lake Bar.
  • Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.7 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
