Consumers Energy remains committed to the health and well being of our customers, employees and communities here in Michigan. While we temporarily suspended some of our in-home and onsite energy efficiency programs in March, we are now in the process of re-opening them so we can continue helping you save energy and money. You can be assured your safety will continue to be our priority. Our teams will be following enhanced safety protocols, including maintaining social distancing where possible and wearing face masks when within six feet to others. Some programs will offer virtual or no-contact options to our in-person support. We look forward to working with you.

Is Your Old Appliance Worth Something?

Your old fridge, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier could be adding up to $150 a year to your energy bill. But don’t take it to the dump - recycle it instead. If it’s in working condition, we’ll pick it up (free of charge) and give you a cash rebate.

To get started, click below to schedule your appliance pick-up online. Or call us at 888-990-2246.

How Appliance Recycling Works

Eligible Appliances

Old appliances eligible for the Appliance Recycling program are:

  • Clean, working refrigerators and freezers between 10 cubic feet and 30 cubic feet in size
  • Room air conditioners or dehumidifiers in working condition, which must be picked up at the same time as other appliances

Earn Rebates

You can receive $50 for each eligible refrigerator or freezer that you recycle and $15 for each eligible room air conditioner or dehumidifier.

Please note: Each home is limited to recycling two large and/or four small units every calendar year. Someone age 18 years or older must be present at pickup to sign for the release of the unit.

About Our Recycling

We participate in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Responsible Appliance Disposal program. That means that when we recycle appliances:

  • Refrigerant is recovered and reclaimed or destroyed
  • Foam is recovered and reclaimed or destroyed
  • Metals, plastic and glass are recycled
  • PCBs, mercury and used oil are recovered and properly disposed
