Growth Helps Lower Energy Costs for Michigan Families

We fought for, and were the first energy provider to implement, the strongest regulatory protections in the country for data center growth. These protections require data centers and other large customers to pay for 100% of the energy they use. The protections also require large customers to pay for their own poles, lines and equipment – and all generation, transmission and distribution costs. That means data centers pay more so residential customers can pay less.

Data Centers Will Help Lower Energy Costs

Consumers Energy is the first energy provider in Michigan to fight for the strongest regulatory protections in the nation to ensure data centers pay ALL their costs in full.

That means:
- You won’t pay for the energy data centers use. Data centers are required to pay for 100% of the energy they use.
- You won’t pay for energy infrastructure serving data centers. Data centers pay for their own poles, lines and equipment – and all generation, transmission and distribution costs.
- You won’t pay if data centers leave the system. If they do, they’re required to pay an exit fee covering their poles, lines and equipment, protecting you from cost shifting.

We Have Plenty of Energy

With or without data centers in our communities, we have plenty of reliable energy supply to power homes and businesses now and in the future – even on the hottest days of the year.

We’re always evaluating and ensuring a diverse supply of natural gas, solar and battery storage projects to meet Michigan’s growing energy demand.

Our Energy Supply Plan includes over 13 gigawatts (GW) of expanded renewable and clean energy resources along with two new natural gas plants totaling 1.5 GW.

Our long-term plan includes nationally recognized energy efficiency programs that have already saved customers $8.5 billion since 2009. This approach ensures power is available every hour of every day while keeping costs as low as possible.

Growth Contributes to Reliability

Infrastructure investments made by new businesses serve the needs of the proposed project and contribute to reliability in the surrounding area.

In 2025, upgrades made to the grid saved customers $15 million in avoided outage costs.

Outage events, a key indicator of system damage, rose nearly 20% in 2025, yet customers experienced 130,000 less outages thanks to grid securing efforts and increased system automation.

We Are Committed to the Environment

We are committed to the environment – to clean air, water, and land and to protect the planet which matters to all of us.

Our two new natural gas plants repurpose existing industrial sites at Karn Generating Facility in Bay County and Thetford Township in Genesee County, minimizing land impacts and leveraging existing grid infrastructure to deliver fast-starting, on-demand power when customers need it.

Our Energy Supply Plan will not only comply with Michigan’s 2023 energy law but will also add cost-effective resources to ensure new growth is served with a diverse portfolio of lowest cost energy sources.
