Cross Winds Energy Park

We’re committed to being a good neighbor in Tuscola County. That’s why the Cross Winds Energy Park was designed in compliance with wind zoning ordinances created to protect the health, safety and welfare of nearby residents. Phase I of the project is a 111-megawatt wind energy facility that brought new jobs and other economic benefits to the immediate area and beyond. Phase I has been operating since 2014. Phase II of the project added another 19 turbines and an additional 44 megawatts of production capability to the overall facility. Phase II has been operating since January 2018.

Phase III increased the production capability by another 76 megawatts with the addition of 33 new turbines. Phase III went into commercial operation in December 2019.

Cross Winds Energy Park Economic Benefits

  • 150 construction-related jobs and eight operating and maintenance jobs were created by Phase I of the project. Each additional phase created construction jobs, Cross Winds Energy Park now has 16 operating and maintenance jobs.
  • More than $100 million of the $250 million project investment in Phase I was directed to Michigan-based vendors or suppliers. In each phase of the project, Consumers Energy works to identify Michigan-based vendors and suppliers and to encourage our contractors to select Michigan-based subcontractors and suppliers. This is part of Consumers Energy’s commitment to Pure Michigan Business Connect.
  • Millions of dollars in new tax revenue will be generated throughout the life of the project.
  • Landowners will be paid millions of dollars collectively pursuant to their easements. These annual payments will be an additional income stream into the area over the life of the project.
  • Millions of dollars per year of economic impact to Tuscola County will be accounted for during the project’s lifetime.
